What Is Tennis Elbow? Causes & Symptoms.
Did you realize it’s possible to be affected by “tennis elbow” even without ever touching a tennis racket? At Amazing Spine Care, our skilled chiropractor diagnoses and treats elbow and wrist pain — clinically known as lateral epicondylitis—in hundreds of men and women every year.
A variety of connective tissues (primarily tendons and the muscles which extend your wrist) attach on the outer edge of your elbow. In tennis elbow, these tendons and muscles (especially the extensor carpi radialis brevis) become inflamed and aggravated due to repetitive overuse, which can cause tears in the fibers.
This can happen due to excessive bending of the wrist and elbow, which often occurs during activities such as:
- Tennis
- Racquetball
- Field hockey
- Weightlifters
- Painting
- Plumbing
- Cooking
People between the ages of 30-50; people with improper technique; and people with inadequate recovery, nutrition, and other factors, may be more at risk for developing tennis elbow.
Tennis Elbow Symptoms
When this condition develops, symptoms generally come on gradual and include pain, burning, swelling, and tenderness on the lateral outside of the elbow as well as weakness in the forearm and grip. These symptoms may worsen during specific activities, including any of the ones listed above as well as opening jars and doorways.
Wrist Pain
Pain in the joints of the wrist can stem from a variety of issues and share a lot in common with pain radiating from your elbow. In fact, if you are already suffering from tennis elbow and the tendons and muscles are inflamed, you can feel the ache in your wrists. Additionally, conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, or pressure on the median nerve, usually cause by repetitive strains, and injuries sustain in car accidents or while playing sports, can cause pain, numbness and pain in your wrist, arm, and elbow.
How Chiropractic Care Can Ease Elbow & Wrist Pain
Starting with the spine, our chiropractor can help you find some much needed relief from your elbow or wrist pain. In addition to realigning the spinal joints, adjustments have been shown to trigger the release of natural analgesics in the body, which can provide near-immediate relief.
In addition to adjustments and gentle joint mobilizations, you’ll discover a variety of ways our team can treat and prevent your tennis elbow or wrist pain symptoms, including:
- Physical rehabilitation exercises, including wrist curls, towel squeezes, wrist flexion stretches, and self-myofascial release techniques
- Nutritional counseling, to help you make more food choices that will facilitate anti-inflammation and optimized tissue repair
- Ergonomic modifications and recommendations, to minimize continued strain on tissues of the lateral elbow
Shoulder Pain After an Auto Collision
This is another common problem we see in our Jacksonville office. The shoulder joint is very complex, anatomically, and there are many things that can go wrong and cause pain and dysfunction. Our chiropractor team, led by Dr. Alan Khigher, is trained to help patients recover from this type of condition.
Whether your shoulder pain is caused by direct trauma or is secondary to neck injury, Dr. Alan Khiger will first pinpoint the root cause of the symptoms and then develop a treatment plan that will correct the underlying problem. If necessary, we’ll refer you to appropriate specialists for further exam.
