Chiropractic provides a long term, successful solution for sufferers of back pain. It is recognised as the most physically and cost effective treatment for back pain.
Chiropractic treats the cause of the pain, not the pain itself. Often headaches originate in the neck (called cervicogenic headaches). Chiropractic is a safe and sensible alternative anti-inflammatories & muscle relaxants.
Your neck supports the weight and movement of your head. Chiropractic ensures your neck keeps doing its job properly and pain free.
Chiropractic focuses on the root of the problem (muscle spasm and joint locking as a result of the whiplash) and goes beyond what may or may no be revealed on an x-ray.
Chiropractic ensures a faster and more effective recovery after sport injuries by restoring and maintaining optimal joint and muscle biomechanics. It is often the preferred therapy by sports men and women.
Chiropractic helps you appreciate your pregnancy and enjoy the changes your body is experiencing by ensuring proper spinal function.
Birth Trauma & Colic
Birth is often traumatic for both mother and child. Chiropractic can help your and your baby recover from this dramatic process.
Arthritis & Joint Ache
Chiropractic can the edge off getting old and provides natural relief for arthritis and other joint problems.
Knee & Shoulder Pain
Often knee & shoulder pain is caused by a relative misalignment in other parts of the skeleton & compensation in & around the affected joint. Chiropractic corrects the root mechanical issue.
Headaches (cephalgia) are a common reason why people may visit their family doctor. Tension type headache, migraine orcervicogenic headaches are common types of headache you may get. Did you know that one of your headache treatment options is your local chiropractor? Chiropractic could help you manage the musculoskeletal causes of your headache and migraine.
Headaches are so common that almost everyone has the odd headache now and again and just takes it for granted, but you may be suffering more than you can cope with. Headaches at least once a week or more are of concern and need to be examined by your local chiropractor or GP.
Headache treatment as done by a chiropractor will always start off with a thoroughphysical and historical examination to determine if you have a tension type headache, cervicogenic headache, migraine or another type of headache.
The aim of Chiropractic care for headaches is to:
• Give relief of headache pain,
• Help reduce dependency on painkiller medication,
• Reduce the frequency and severity of headaches,
• Include sensible advice on how to cut down the physical stress in your life,
• Help chiropractic patients manage their chronic headaches.
Lower Back Pain Treatment
Back pain drastically affects our health and is a leading reason why people seek Chiropractic therapy. Your local chiropractor can help provide lower back pain treatment and help you manage the pain in your lower back.
Current evidence suggests that over 70% of adults get lower back pain at some time during their life. However, staying active with good exercise movements and with the experience of a chiropractor, conservative treatment like Chiropractic can help lower back pain causes.
Back Pain Relief
For lower back pain relief you definitely can visit your local chiropractor. The chiropractor can help you lower the stress to your spinal joints (facet joints), nerves and muscles. The aim is to reduce your risk factors for back pain from occurring.
Chiropractic adjustments (spinal manipulative therapy) can help restricted spinal joints move better. Your chiropractor won’t only use spinal manipulation. They will also remind you to promote your health through lower back exercises, stretches and maybe nutrition awareness. Maintaining a healthy weight can also help you recover from a back injury. Your diet may also have an effect on the inflammation in your body. A good example would be diet causing a gout episode.
Before having a laminectomy or discectomy for your backache it is recommended that normally about six weeks of conservative care be done first. This is to see if the body will heal itself without the need for spinal surgery. However, there are times when spinal surgery is a medical emergency. Thankfully these are rare events, like cauda equina.
Your neck supports the weight and movement of your head – quite a job, since an adult’s head can weigh between 4.5 – 6.3kgs! It also contains the vast majority of nerves that reach from your brain to the rest of your body, like a pipe full of fibre optic cable. With the amount of driving, computer work and TV watching that most of us do, it’s not surprising that we may need a little chiropractic to help keep our necks doing their job properly.
Arthritis Treatment Without Medication
Arthritis is feared by all, but is a natural part of the ageing process. There are many forms of arthritis with osteoarthritis being the most common. Then there is also gout and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) is also described as degenerative joint disease or ‘wear and tear’ which is very different to osteoporosis which is bone loss disease.
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in the joints is worn down. The causes might be as a result of wear and tear, ageing, trauma injury or misuse. It can be due to either increased forces on a functional joint or a normal force on a dysfunctional joint over time.
Osteoarthritis also includes loss of cartilage, overgrowth of bone and the formation of bony spurs. This causes the bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, swelling and loss of motion of the joint. Osteoarthritis can occur in any joint but most often occurs in the hips, knees, hands or the spine.
Sports Injury Clinic
We are told to exercise regularly in order to keep healthy. But what if a minor or a major injury is stopping you doing what you want to do. From the professional sports person to the weekend warrior or occasional gym user, muscle and joint injuries are likely to occur. These can range from mild strains to the career ending injury. So where do you go for treatment to prevent injuries from occurring? You could give your local chiropractor a visit.
Chronic Sport Injury
Repeated stresses may lead to slight loss of proper functional movement in the bones of your spine, pelvis or legs and arms. This in turn interferes with the relationship your muscles and nerves have and so they then become affected. You may have just ignored the niggles or pain and carried on with your sport for too long only to now find yourself stuck with a chronic injury.
Your chiropractor can not only deal with acute injuries but these long ongoing ones too. Chiropractors can see patients with :
• Hamstring or calf strains
• Achilles tendon injuries
• Groin & thigh strains
• Low back pain
• Tennis elbow
• Shoulder sprains and strains (Rotator Cuff injuries)
• Sciatica (often mistaken for hamstring strains)
Chiropractic Helps Golf Injuries
PGA golfers like Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington have needed the services of a chiropractor in order for them to be able to keep playing a tournament and recover between events. However, it is not just PGA pros who can benefit from seeing chiropractors even everyday golfers can feel a difference from a chiropractic treatment.
Chiropractors aim to help correct little or even big golf injuries picked up and can provide ongoing performance maintenance care as golf is a sport of repetitive action. Just think of how many golf balls you can hit at a golf driving range alone, this is where repetitive strain injuries occur.
Golf involves players going from a stand still to very fast club head speeds in no time at all. This requires good posture balance and importantly the ability to rotate in you spine properly. When you start losing drive distance from the tee box or can’t get rid of a horrible hook shot maybe consider if you are losing spinal rotation.
The normal healthy spine should have three curves creating a gentle S-shape to it. When addressing a golf ball poor posture can easily create flattened or exaggerated curves in your spine that will play havoc with your swing. Having a chiropractor look at your spinal ranges of motion could help pick up restriction in your back joints. Releasing these restrictions through a chiropractic adjustment and specific muscle techniques and rehabilitation exercises could get you back in the golf day just in time.
Padraig Harrington the 2007/2008 Britsh Open champion has been using the services of his doctor of Chiropractic, Dr Dale Richardson, for over 12 years. Dr Richardson consults Padraig nearly on a daily basis whilst he is on tour winning tournaments on the PGA and European PGA tour. Dr Richardson and Padraig have at times created great interest whilst Padriag has required treatment on the golf course, which you can see from the photo.
So if you are an aspiring professional golfer, an existing pro-golfer or a weekend warrior golfer a chiropractor could be a vital link to keep you playing your game of golf. You may even be interested to know that you can use your chiropractor to hit the ball further. Chiropractors make use of the Foot Levelers technology for creating custom-made golf orthotics to wear in your golf shoes. These golf orthotics have been shown to allow PGA golfers to hit the golf ball further off the tee box. You can read more about Foot Levelers orthotics here.
Whiplash injuries are also known asacceleration/deceleration injuries and need not be a result of car accident. In fact you do not have to hit your head or neck. Just a sudden movement, especially if it is repetitive, may cause a whiplash injury.
A slip, a fall, or a collision on the sports field with an opponent can all give you a whiplash injury. In a road accident all it can take is 8km/h or 5mph of velocity to cause whiplash symptoms. So even a ‘minor’ bumper bashing can give whiplash neck injury.
You may have been told that there is no evidence of an injury to your neck from the neck x-rays taken at the hospital. However, this is often the case, because initially nothing may show up on a neck x-ray unless the accident was very severe and caused a dislocation or fracture of the bones. X-rays only show bone. Cervical disc injury and neck muscle strain injuries cannot be seen as the x-ray passes through them. Sometimes if a more serious injury is suspected CAT scans or MRI scans are taken at the hospital.
Whiplash symptoms can sometimes take months or even longer to appear, as your body can compensate in the short term.
Rather than just a simple injury of a neck muscle strain or neck ligament sprain, research shows that during a road traffic accident involving a rear-end shunt, the neck curves in an abnormal S-shape which alters normal neck movement.
Normally the joints at the back of your neck glide over each other and are self-lubricated, but a whiplash injury forces them together. This can damage the surrounding area including your spinal nerves, neck muscles, ligaments and back discs.
There are tiny nerve receptors in the neck ligaments, muscles and in the spinal joint capsule surrounding the vertebral joints called, proprioceptors. These relay constant information to your brain about the position of the joints. If these proprioceptors have been disturbed, you may experience some of the following whiplash symptoms :
• Neck pain/Muscle Spasm
• Arm pain
• Poor Concentration
The result is a loss of proper movement in the joints in your neck and stiffness in your muscles. This can lead to pain, although it may take days, weeks or even months to develop.
Remember pain is a warning sign that something isn’t functioning properly.
Whiplash treatment is dependent on the severity of the whiplash.
In the early stages of a whiplash injury if there is lots of inflammation and limited movement due to pain then whiplash treatment is focused on calming the inflammation. When pain levels have improved to a suitable level gentle then hands-on work on the vertebral joints can begin.
Once the begining whiplash treatment has gotten you past the initial pain and discomfort rehabilitation exercises is done for the long-term care.
It is important, therefore, to have an active and managed treatment plan for whiplash that aims to improve neck movement and relaxing the strained muscles. Also an an exercise programme from a biokinetist/physiotherapist to help reactivate the muscles of your neck and improve balance.
Common Whiplash Questions
How about Wearing a Collar?
Although in the acute whiplash injury stage a soft collar may be worn for a short time (1-6 weeks), though cervical collars should not be relied upon for a long time (months-years). If you become reliant on a neck brace, the muscles of your neck will become weaker as their job is being done by the neck collar. This would lead to dependency on the soft collar and further pain in the future. So make sure if you have to wear a soft collar because of whiplash then seek the opinion of your local healthcare professional about when it can come off.
I think I have Whiplash,How Do You Tell?
It is always best to have your neck checked after a whiplash incident, like a car crash. Even if you have just “bumped your head” it is very important to have it checked. Your chiropractor can check your neck and if need take or refer you for a neck x-ray to check if there are any serious problems. Pain is the usual sign you may have a whiplash injury.
